My kids loved doing this project after learning about the life cycle of a butterfly! 2nd graders are all about showing off their own style and creativity and this activity gave them the freedom to color their butterfly in their own unique way. Plus it was a great writing and sorting activity!
The first step is to decide which butterfly body you will have the students use. There is the option for a completely blank one (more freedom/creativity in coloring), one with outlines, and one with outlines and dots. You may also choose to provide some copies of each so that the students can decide for themselves as I did. This makes this project less cookie cutter!
Students can color with watercolors, markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Before affixing the wheel to the back of the butterfly, tape two pipe cleaner pieces to the back of the butterfly’s head for the antennae. Students can curl them with their fingers or use a pencil to help them. Then poke a hole in the center of the wheel and butterfly with a push pin, insert a brass fastener (brad), and finish assembly. The finished product is so cute that students will be so excited to share their creations and learning with others. Enjoy!
