Product Description
Students in the primary grades are gaining their first experiences with nonfiction literacy materials and research earlier than ever. Guiding students through these first experiences requires a high-degree of scaffolded support to ensure the development of these essential skills at an early age.

Bringing together applicable science content and English Language Arts Common Core State Strategies will provide you with an excellent opportunity develop many of the critical research skills students will need to refine as they progress through the primary grades and on into middle and high school.

This 2-3 week unit focuses on the Monarch butterfly's annual migration from North America to Central Mexico, as well as tapping into background knowledge of the butterfly life cycle. Students will utilize a variety of print and digital resources, graphic organizers for background knowledge, strategies for generating questions, developing vocabulary, note-taking and writing development.

Focus

QUESTION: What makes the Monarch migration so difficult for Monarch butterflies?

This unit includes read alouds/guided reading recommendations in both print and digital format, vocabulary development lessons, note-taking strategies, and research strategy lessons as well as a final writing assignment designed to provide students with an opportunity to thoroughly demonstrate their learning and understandings. Literacy materials selected will provide multiple examples of the targeted learning objective(s).

Unit Study includes 10 days of lessons outlined in detail for you, hyperlinks to useful websites/resources, book selection list for read alouds or guided reading as well as 4 graphic organizers and a writing rubric for the final writing project.
