Color a butterfly and a flower, attach the paper to a pencil or straw, and spin. You'll see the butterfly rests on the flower - it's an easy illusion that students will ♥ love ♥.
This activity requires very basic materials (paper, crayons, tape, a pencil or straw) and just a few minutes to complete. It can easily be extended if students want to draw their own illusions. I included a blank page for this purpose!
I've included a video that shows you how to make an illusion and two videos of an illusion as it spins - one close to the camera and one farther away. Does the distance make a difference in how well the illusion works? Does it matter if you color it with bright or dark colors? What if you spin it slowly or quickly?
