This activity is a companion to a Butterfly Addition Worksheet which has been updated to a 2 worksheet set. Both resources allow students to practice subtraction with a concrete model that helps make the concept of "taking away" more concrete. The first half of the smartboard resource is a matching activity. Students will learn that the first number on a subtraction sentence represents the total amount. The second number in a subtraction sentence represents how many are taken away. The models have X's on them to represent this on the caterpillars bodies. Students will solve the facts after matching correctly. Part 2 allows students to mark their own X's to help solve each subtraction sentence. Look for my updated worksheet resource on my TPT store.
