Purchase Includes 2 Study Guides - Bystander and The Revealers
Bystander-This book presents the powerful story of Eric Hayes, a 7th grade student at Bellport Central Middle School and his encounters with school bullying. It is also a tale of a young man’s broken relationship with his father, his changing connection with his mother, and his newly formed and fragile friendship with Mary, a student at the school who has been both bully and target. Eric is forced to make mature, life-altering decisions while all the while trying to fit in and understand the new community of which he is now a part. His struggles to make these decisions and, “do the right thing,” will impact all readers. While geared to a middle school audience, this book can easily be read by advanced upper-elementary school students and can also be used successfully in selected high school classes. Administrators, as well, will understand the benefit this book’s message brings to students, faculty and staff.
The Revealers-by Doug Whilhelm, tells the story of three friends—Catalina, Elliot, and Russell--who are the victims of bullying at their middle school, and how they use technology and the need to “tell one’s story,” as an unusual, but effective, way to reveal the intimidation that is occurring, but never addressed. In this novel, the three friends call upon their own inner courage, the scientific method, and support from understanding adults to stand up to the cruelty they experience on a near-daily basis, thus positively impacting the lives of other students by their actions. This novel makes an excellent companion reading for Bystander. It can also be read independently.
