This activity helps students define then analyze bias in two sources about Byzantine Emperor Justinian written by the same author, Procopius, his personal historian. The first source glorifies Justinian, the second criticizes him. Students must identify Procopius' argument, select his evidence, then infer the author's purpose while discussing the reliability of the source. This is a great close reading activity-short, proper level for High School, and I also sell a rubric that you can use to evaluate students' close reading skills. Great for setting and measuring SLOs. Also in my store is a FREE powerpoint which has exemplar answers to each question for modeling purposes.
