This lesson requires students to research and look up accurate answers to discussion questions about the Byzantine Empire. Topics are intentionally broad to give students the intellectual space to discuss each event/person/term with each other to establish memorable learning. They will look into the background of Emperor Justinian, the rise and fall of the empire, and more!
I use inquiry projects as a way to introduce a new unit because they give students essential background information before we launch deeply into the topic. The discussion questions challenge students to research, evaluate, and synthesize information, and the social nature of the task helps to create memories with students for better retention.
