My students were struggling with writing coherent introductions. They couldn't seem to grasp that the thesis statement should come at the end of the introduction, and should be the guide for the rest of the essay. After some serious thought, I came up with these activities. The result was beautiful--my students went from writing introductions that would have earned them between a No Score or 3 on the CAHSEE to almost all of them scoring a 3 or 4. They expressed so much more confidence after doing these activities. Next year I'll definitely start earlier with these types of writing activities.
