This is a fun but effective way to get the students to understand the role of a campaign manager, "Handler" in a presidential election. I use this in my AP American Government class in place of a Free Response question. The students can go it alone or work with a partner. They have to select a democrat or republican that they think will win the 2016 presidential race. I give them possible candidates but as we all know more may show up on the political scene in the next year. They have to discuss in their essay reasons why they chose their candidate and how their candidate will create a bigger, "Tent" to get more voters. They have to discuss a campaign strategy for the primaries and general election. I also provide a rubric. This was a favorite assignment of most of my students last semester.
