I created the “Capital Cities World Tour” as a means of engaging students in practicing their number sense skills with decimals and whole numbers.
Students are presented with the scenario of traveling around the world to 24 different capital cities. Students must complete a variety of mathematical calculations based on the data given on each country card and record their solutions on a recording sheet (included).
Each country card contains:
• Capital city
• Country population
• Official language
• Translation of “Hello” in the official language
• Flight distance from previous city
In each country, students must answer 1-2 Math questions using real facts about the country. Questions relate to statistics about the country, such as land area, population density, median ages, GDP, age distribution, etc. All answers are found using basic operations (+, -, x, ÷) with decimal or whole numbers. They must also keep a running total (well, in this case a flying total ☺) of the number of kilometres/miles travelled as they complete their world tour.
• 24 country cards
• 6-page recording sheet for calculations with 40 math questions
• Teacher answer key
Your download includes the US version, as well as the Canadian version (metric).
**Due to preview file size restrictions, the world map watermark background was removed from the preview file; however, it will be present on all country cards in your downloaded file.**
