Here's a splashy (and magical) way to introduce the earth science idea that living creatures are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. It's a magic trick called CARBON CREATURES. I wrote this many years ago - circa - 1996. It's fun and even little kids can perform the magic. Sitting on a table are a piece of colored paper and a bottomless paper cup. Four small pieces of tissue (or construction) paper are dropped into a bottomless paper cup. One piece of tissue paper has the letter C = carbon. One piece of tissue paper has the letter H = hydrogen. One piece of paper has the letter and number O2 = oxygen. The last piece of tissue paper has an N = nitrogen on it. They are momentarily covered by a paper cup. When the cup is lifted away, the pieces of paper have transformed into a little tissue paper person.* Easy to perform. Fun. Over the years, I've thought about this magic trick a lot. It's a little more complicated, but can be even more magical if you cut add two additional elements. 1. A paper sack. 2. A second bottomless paper cup with no paper circle glued to it. Start with the non-circle cup IN the paper sack. When the gimmicked paper cup is removed to show the little carbon creature man... drop the gimmicked paper cup in the paper sack. Show carbon creature man and then remove the non-gimmicked bottomless paper cup our of the paper sack (as if) it was the original. Enjoy!
