Start gathering your scrap cardboard!! I did these little gingerbread houses as a ‘filler’ project last year for some 5th grade classes that were ahead in our rotation. The gingerbread houses were an instant hit (your kiddos will THANK you)! I set the materials out (detailed material list in lesson plan... cardboard, strong glue, scissors, paint 'stamping' materials), give a brief demonstration on the guidelines and some possibilities of this project and let the little artists have at it! I provide a link to my unlisted Youtube video instructions in the lesson plan file. You could use the video for clarification or simply just play that for your students to cover instructions/guidelines/ideas as I do! I think that is an awesome opportunity for each student to work to his or her ability level and not stress about this outcome. I found that my students who often struggle made more basic gingerbread houses, but did it on their own and had a wonderful time exploring textures in and paint on cardboard. Any normal stress turned into delight! My students who love drawing kicked that element up a notch, my students who love paint and color had a blast kicking up the surface design and my little engineering-focused artists found ways to build their gingerbread houses out and up as well as put interactive parts on their gingerbread house. That being said, we are a STEM certified + AdvancED STEM certified school, and my classroom has been a STEAM classroom for years. Many of my students naturally gravitated towards a STEAM approach (sketching first, heavier engineering ideas, etc). I discuss several STEM/STEAM options in the lesson as well. If you work with an age where Exacto knives are appropriate for use, the possibilities could be even more endless! This is truly a project where the teacher takes on more of a facilitator role as the gingerbread houses come to life in all kinds of different ways at the hands of each little artist! Thank you for checking out this fun lesson from the classroom of Claire Dunaway Cyr
