 The SIX color sections are:
 BLUE – “Name 5” - IDENTIFYING CATEGORY MEMBERS (This is an activity I do frequently with my students. It’s easy to measure progress and it’s fun!)
 GREEN - Name the PARTS of a specific category member
 PINK - Name the COMPOSITION of specific items
 ORANGE/YELLOW - Given a category member GROUP THE ITEMS into the appropriate category
 PURPLE - This set is simply the NAME OF THE CATEGORY to be used with the other colored sections OR to stand alone and have the student name category members
 BROWN – ASSOCIATIONS – “What things go with ____________?”

A FEW DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE THESE CARDS:
 Work on one color section at a time such as “NAME 5” or “NAME THE PARTS” or “ASSOCIATIONS”, etc.
 Put all of the cards (or select just one, two or three color sections) in a pile OR spread out face down all over the table. Have the student draw a card and complete the task. You can use mixed color sections or single color sections.
 Assign a number from 1 to 6 to each of the color sections. The student rolls a die and chooses a card from that section and follows the directions on the card.
 To make the tasks more challenging have the student add more answers to the category task (e.g. name 7 category members instead of 5) OR have them name two different categories the word could fit into, etc.
 Have the student complete the task as outlined on the card then have them explain why they answered the way they did.
 Set out the PURPLE category name cards then have the student draw cards from other color sections and match them to the correct category name.
 MANY WORDS WILL FIT INTO MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY (e.g. “BIRD” can fit in the “ANIMAL” category as well as “THINGS IN THE SKY” or the “THINGS THAT FLY”, etc.) so encourage your students to discover ALL of the possibilities!!
 Have the student select two cards in a category and tell you how those words are the same and how they are different.
 You pick a PICTURE card and describe it without saying the name. The student tries to guess the item. Then have the student do the description. They only get it “right” if the listener can name the category correctly so they need to give a good description! Then talk about the category name, other possible members, etc.
 Pick a few cards, name a category and ask which one belongs OR which doesn’t belong. Have the students explain their decision.
 Think up some of your own fun ways to use the cards! I have been playing around with using commercial game boards….
