Use this fun game to teach vocabulary, sorting and classification skills. There are four to ten photographic pictures in each of 30 categories such as clothing, food, fruits, vegetables, transportation, occupations, musical instruments, appliances, spots body parts, jewelry, weather and many more. There are over 185 black and white photographs that depict real objects. This is a simple and easy activity that engages your students while teaching them vocabulary and categories.
2 to 5 players
•Print one copy of the “CATEGORY MAT ” boards (pages 5-9) on cardstock and laminate for durability.
•Print one copy of the picture cards (page 10-30) on cardstock and laminate for durability. Cut apart picture cards. Extra picture cards have been included for variety. Pick the ones that you wish to use.
•Give each student a one “CATEGORY MAT” board. Extras have been included for variety.
Playing The Game:
Spread out all picture cards facedown on the table in rows. The object of the game is for each player to locate all the pictures that fit into the categories on his/her “CATEGORY MAT”. Randomly choose a player to go first. Taking turns, each player turns over one picture card from the table, naming it and telling what category it belongs to. The student can use the following sentence as he/she glues a picture into a category:
A ____________________ is a _________________________.
(item name) (category)
If the picture fits into one of the categories one on his/her “CATEGORY MAT”, it is placed in a pile in that section of the “CATEGFORY MAT”, and play passes to the left. If it does fit into one of the categories on the players “CATEGFORY MAT”, the picture is turned face down again and play passes to the left.
The winner is the player who collects the most pictures on his/her “CATEGORY MAT” at the end of the allotted time.
