These mantra cards were inspired by an activity I do with at-risk and struggling high school students. I use cheap flip-notebooks from the dollar store. During counseling, I explain the word mantra and work with students to identify one or two mantras about school we can put in the notebook. Their homework each week is to consider the ideas in the notebook and, depending on where the student is at with life, to add something to it. So many times students view graduation, grades, credit deficiency, and missing assignments as a moral issue. They’re certain that if they’re having trouble in school it must be because they are bad, lazy, or flawed. In reality, everybody wants to succeed. When students aren’t succeeding something is standing in their way. Often, by removing the perceived moral component to academics, students have a giant weight taken off their shoulders and do significantly better in school. By removing the perceived moral pressure around school we also empower students to consider what their values, strengths, and goals are. Empowerment for the win!

To use these cards, simply print. You may choose to have these cards in a bin for students to grab as they come see you (you might even have them in a special spot and direct applicable youngsters to them). You may choose to print the whole set for a particular student and use a binder ring to connect them. You might choose to give a student 1 or 2 cards a week. You might choose to use the blank cards, or not. These cards aren’t super cute and hip because it wouldn’t serve them to be. Like the buddhists say, sometimes simplicity is key. These mantra cards are meant to reframe mindsets and be one more tool to assist in the healing of academic trauma.
