Product Description
This is the second packet focused on writing an argumentative essay based on the discussion topic question of: "Should Tablets Replace Textbooks in K-12 Schools?" This packet also includes the Common Core Standards that are addressed within this packet.

There is a mini-lesson at the beginning of this packet that reviews "How to Cite Evidence". We review direct quotations, summarizing, and paraphrasing. This was a useful mini-lesson as many students did not recall how to include textual evidence within their argumentative essays.

The next mini-lesson provided within this packet is teaching the students a strategy to paraphrase since it is different from summarizing. The strategy we utilized is called 4R's (Replace, Rearrange, Realize, and Recheck), which we generated a poster for and posted it on TpT in our store. We constantly refer to this poster to remind our students how to utilize this learned strategy. This helped our students gather textual evidence and then rewrite the evidence without plagiarizing. We also expect the students to connect the evidence to the discussion question as a guide to help them when writing their formal argumentative essay. We also provide our students with Guided Practice first before having them engage in independent work.

This textual evidence that we had our students paraphrase was found in the Pro/Con Arguments section found on the website http://www.procon.org. We printed out the different pieces of "evidence" and placed them on index cards. We then laminated the cards so that the students could paraphrase directly on the cards utilizing the 4R's strategy.

Paraphrasing is a necessary strategy for our students who are taking the Common Core English regents exam. This will ensure that they do not plagiarize but include textual evidence within their essays.

This is the second packet in the series of five packets related to this topic of "Should Tablets replace Textbooks in K-12 Schools?"

We have also included a lesson plan that focuses on many of the strategies and language underpinnings students need to write a coherent and comprehensive argumentative essay.
