I presented this task to students as a way to practice/assess problem-solving and plotting fractions on a number line. It provided a lot of great insights in both areas!
I presented this task to students after a few days of direct instruction with fractions on a number line. I allowed students to work independently or with a partner, and encouraged them to use the tools we used in small group.
This took a whole hour math block for my students! We started by brainstorming good tools and strategies we might use, spent about 40 minutes working on it and sharing strategies with each other, and used about ten minutes at the end to debrief.
There is a fast-finisher challenge at the end to push your learners who are ready for a challenge!
