Using this document has changed the independence and awareness of my book clubs. Using this document first with your whole class "book club" (a text you read aloud) you can teach students who to properly and appropriately monitor what is going well and what needs improvement. Students can provide evidence for both academic and social aspects of being in a book club. In addition, this is aligned with the speaking and listening standards and pushes students to not only read their texts, but to think deeply in order to prepare for a successful book club meeting.
Also, to make students feel part of the process, blank sheets are provided. These are meant for students to create their own set of expectations prior to the final version. Although I don't veer from the final version in this download, many of the students ideas are present in some way, shape or form and they don't realize I didn't use their ideas word for word!
