This lesson plan is aligned to Common Core State Standards and designed to reflect a key shift of the standards - the need to closely read and guide students through that reading using text-dependent questions. The lesson plan is designed using the Understanding by Design framework and reflecting the Gradual Release of Responsibility model written about by Fisher and Frey. During the first two stage of the lesson, text-dependent questions and responses are provided to help students develop skill relative to Reading Standard 2, determining central ideas and tracing their development. As the lesson progresses, responsibility shifts to students and the scaffolding is reduced. This lesson is appropriate for late middle school or high school, depending on how the teacher will implement the plan and the level of readers in the class.
