Welcome to the Common Core Aligned Assessments Bank for Grade 4 Writing- a complete assessment resource bank for year-round assessment of Common Core Writing Standards This Assessment Bank is thorough, highly detailed and was designed to save teachers time in developing assessments to use in assessing student performance in and learning of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in the area of ELA Writing. Everything you need for assessing student writing progress is in this writing assessment bank.


Student performance of the majority of the standards in this ELA Writing Assessment Bank is best measured using authentic-type performance assessments. Therefore, the assessments in this Writing assessment bank are administered using writing prompts, student writing samples, and scoring rubrics. This assessment bank contains more than 560 pages and more than 160 assessments for the area of writing. Full and complete scoring rubrics are provided for each assessment. This writing assessment bank contains over 50 writing scoring rubrics to accompany the assessments. Every assessment has specific teacher directions which are provided at the top of each Assessment Record for each assessment in the Assessment Bank. Student pages for writing are also included.

The standards in the Assessment Banks are deconstructed into two or more objectives for teaching and learning. The assessments are targeted to measure progress on the specific objectives, are authentic and curriculum-based and were designed to provide you with relevant student performance data. Due to the nature of some assessments and the frequency of administration, I have included at least two forms of most all of the standard/objective assessments, (i.e., Form A, Form B., etc.) Most assessments contain more than two forms- (i.e., A-D; A-E – from 4 to 5 different assessments for each objective). For these assessments, teachers can alternate the use of the different forms to administer pre—and post-tests and to measure on-going progress periodically. In addition, teachers can use the alternate forms of the assessments to reduce the possibility that students may learn the responses to the assessments simply by engaging in the assessment repeatedly. Again, most assessments include more than two forms for these purposes. For those very few that do not, the assessment can be used more than once with different student work samples (i.e., rubrics).


All assessments have an accompanying Assessment Record for teachers to use to document student performance and progress in mastering the standard or objective over Forms and over time. These Assessment Records provide detailed teacher directions for administering the assessments, as well as a chart for recording dates of administration and student scores for the assessments. Teachers choosing to use these Assessment Records simply transfer the assessment data from the actual teacher or student assessment form to the Assessment Record Form. These Assessment Record forms would be ideal to use to monitor student performance over time and to report student progress to parents during parent conferences or to team members during Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings.


Also included at the end of the Assessment Banks are CCSS Class Performance Records for Writing. These Class Performance Records can be used to determine the overall performance toward the Common Core Standards in the area of writing for an entire class. Teachers using these forms can easily and quickly see the overall level of performance for all students in one class related to individual standards to assist in planning and making overall instructional decisions.


These assessments were intentionally designed to be used in conjunction with my Common Core Standards Aligned IEP Goal and Objective Bank for Grade 4, but can be used and would be highly useful and beneficial to any teacher responsible for teaching and assessing the Common Core State Standards in the area of writing for Grade 4.
