I created this novel study for the higher-level 5th graders at our school who need to be challenged. This novel study begins with an introduction to Medieval Times and King Arthur. Most activities in this novel study are self-differentiating. Students may choose from a variety of writing prompts or otherwise.
The first four pages of this novel study are to be used before beginning the novel. These activities provide an introduction to concepts that are critical to understand before beginning the novel. Following these four pages are a series of activities that are categorized by "Word Work" or vocabulary activities, "Analyzing the Text" or "Research" projects. Students are required to use higher level thinking skills to complete these assignments. After reading, writing prompts ask students to reflect on what they read, and to use this information to think about themes, symbols, and events in new ways. Also included is a "Compare and Contrast" activity if you would like to show your students the movie "The Mighty" after reading and studying the novel. Since the movie is rated PG-13, I included the half-sheet permission slip that I sent home with students as well.
I truly hope you enjoy this product. My students and I absolutely LOVED reading "Freak the Mighty" and learning through this novel study. Please let me know if you have any comments about how I can make this product better or any questions about how I used anything with my students. Thank you so much for your purchase!
