This product contains several resources to supplement "The Landlady," by Roald Dahl. These resources include: graphic organizers designed to help students navigate the reading and complete an initial analysis of the text; in-context vocabulary, grammar, and writing activities; two different post-reading activities designed to get students thinking and writing creatively; and two versions of a quiz designed to assess students' understanding of the text as well as their ability to analyze vocabulary in-context. Answer keys are included for graphic organizers and quizzes, and detailed directions and rubrics are included for the creative writing projects.
Throughout the product, I have provided modified assignments to facilitate the differentiation process. The modified assignments are designed to meet the needs of high-achieving students and/or students identified as gifted in English/Language Arts.
To help you navigate the product, I have broken it into five sections: Reading Resources, Post-Reading Resources, Vocabulary Resources, Grammar & Writing Resources, and Assessments. Below, you will find a brief introduction to the materials included in each section.
Reading Resources: In this section, I have included several graphic organizers designed to aid in comprehension and analysis. For several of the graphic organizers, I have included a modified version designed to meet the needs of high-achieving and/or gifted students. Each of the graphic organizers includes a thorough answer key.
Post-Reading Resources: In this section, I have included two post-reading activities designed to get students thinking, writing, and speaking creatively. The first resource is a creative writing assignment that asks students to compose an ending to the story. The second is a Dramatic Monologue assignment that asks students to compose and perform a monologue from the Landlady's perspective. To facilitate the implementation of these activities, I have provided detailed notes, a suggested lesson plan, planning resources for students, and rubrics.
Vocabulary Resources: In this section, I have included two versions of a graphic organizer designed to help students navigate tough vocabulary and grapple with word meanings by identifying context clues. For the on-level version, I have also included a glossary of difficult words at the bottom of the page to further facilitate the reading process. An answer key is included.
Grammar & Writing Resources: In this section, I have included two different grammar-related assignments that ask students to analyze sentence type in the context of the short story "The Landlady." I have also included a graphic organizer and short writing checklist to help students compose an effective summary of the story. Answer keys are included.
Assessments: In this section, I have included two versions of a multiple-choice quiz in the style of many common standards-based assessments. Both versions of the quiz are designed to be used with or without the passage - whatever best suits your and your students' needs. The second version of the assessment includes a constructed response element. Answer keys are included for both assessments.
