Word choice, one of the components of the 6+1 traits of writing, is the use of rich, colorful, precise language. This 40-page "Word Choice" resource was designed to enhance the writing process. The materials in the resource facilitate stronger word choices in students’ writing and equip students with a higher level vocabulary. All activities are aligned to Common Core Standards and the puzzles make an awesome vocabulary or word choice bulletin board. Use the tactile, highly visual materials and interesting activities to help introduce the 6+1 traits of writing at the beginning of the school year or to help stress the importance of stronger word choices in students' writing throughout the year. The 14 jigsaw puzzles contain an overused word choice in the center and synonyms or better word choices around the perimeter. All activities are designed as printables, but any of the materials can be projected. Included are differentiated literacy center and/or whole group lesson ideas and materials to include the following:

The colored puzzles make an awesome Word Choice bulletin board display. The following overused words are addressed in the word choice lessons: good, bad, pretty, ugly, happy, sad, a lot, big, little, said loudly, said quietly, said displeased, and said normally. Eight synonyms for each of the aforementioned overused words are provided in the jigsaw puzzles.
