Teach students to summarize using beginning, middle, and end, as well as writing the morale or lesson of the story. Differentiated copies are included in the zip file as well as a rubric for grading student work. You'll find a file for "On-Level" and "Advanced" students as well as files that have increased white space and larger writing lines for students that require modified work. Each graphic organizer has prompts for the beginning, middle, and end to assist students in knowing how to identify these portions of the text. Prompts are written with common core standard language. After teaching students how to complete this, it makes a great center. My school uses a basil reader program (Reading Street) and this becomes a "must-do" during small group time. Students can work independently or in cooperative groups to complete the work. Additionally, students in need of extra support will benefit from copying pictures (or retell cards if you use Reading Street) to support their summary writing.
