I had so much fun developing this unit and it filled a need in my class for problem solving curriculum. I know you love this unit, it is fun, engaging, and will save you time! These lessons are designed to introduce first graders to problem solving. This unit will take 4 weeks to complete, each week will introduce a new focus that builds off previous lessons. This unit is awesome on it's own and can be a great supplement for many other math programs. This unit is part of my year long first grade math bundle. You can check it out here.
• Week one will introduce students to key words as well as how to use key words to develop a strategy to solve the problem. There are 5 different problem types covered in this unit. Numbers will be less than 10 throughout week 1. This will hopefully allow students time to understand each problem type, the key words, and what operation is needed to solve.
Week 2 teaches students how to label their strategies and week 3 will help students begin to put equations with their work. Week 4 will focus on developing, practicing and implementing high quality question starters. This will help students learn how to have good discussions during share time.
