I had so much fun developing this unit and it filled a need at my school for fractions curriculum. I hope you love this unit and it is a huge help, as well as a time saver for your second grade math class time. Students learn fractions in terms of halves and fourths in first grade, so the biggest new thing with the second grade standard is adding thirds to the mix.
Many lessons in this unit begin with student centered word problems, where students have to read and solve a word problem. Then, the fraction instruction will come from what students have discovered during problem solving. Problems are designed to bring out a certain strategy, and a reinforcement page is given to work after the strategy is pulled out during share time.
I have differentiated many pages in a the most subtle way I could find. I wanted to meet the needs of all learners, but not draw attention to something being different. You will recognize the differentiated pages by this symbol * beside the title.
This unit is awesome on it's own and can be a great supplement for many other math programs. You can check it out here.
With this download you will receive:
2 weeks of detailed lesson plans, (5 lessons) aligned to CCSS.G.3. Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
