Tier Two Vocabulary CCSS 2.L.4, 2.L.5, and 2.L.6
Let’s help our students build a larger vocabulary! The CCSS place an importance on academic vocabulary and we know that vocabulary knowledge influences fluency, comprehension, and student achievement. Second graders should have a tier two vocabulary list of no more than 7 per week in order to fully internalize each word; therefore, I have created a list of 7 tier two vocabulary words. And as we know, multiple exposures and practice are key characteristics of effective vocabulary instruction. So, the following is a list of resources included in this packet to help you teach tier two vocabulary.
Vocabulary Cards – I use these to post on my focus wall while I teach the text. When we move on to the next text, the cards get moved to the word wall. I like to print on the back, the text that the words came from. This way, at the end of the school year when my word wall is taken down I can easily file my cards away! During our reading of the text, my students are encouraged to “tune into interesting words.” I use the 3 blank cards for those interesting words and post them to our word wall.
Vocabulary Matrix – This is a great way to introduce the words as you read the story! I usually fill this out whole-group. Then the students cut and paste it in their “Word Work” composition notebook to keep as a reference.
Vocabulary Game – Games help students play with words and internalize word meanings in a non-threatening environment.
*Helpful tip – I print the game pieces and instructions on cardstock and then laminate before putting all of the contents in a ziploc bag in an accessible place for students during “word work” time.
High Frequency Words CCSS 2.FS.3 and 2.FS.4
This list of 24 sight words is pulled directly from the text. When students practice reading these sight words at home, they will have better success at reading the text fluently and accurately in class!
Word Study CCSS 2.L.1c
Common Core emphasizes a greater command of the English language and this word study increases students’ ability to use their knowledge of language while reading the text. This is an activity that I model at the beginning of the year and as students become more independent this is an activity that they can complete with a partner or independently. When complete, students cut out the graphic organizer and glue it into their “word work” notebook.
Writing CCSS 2.W.2, 2.W.4
The Common Core State Standards place a strong emphasis on text-dependent writing. Text-dependent writing provides students with an opportunity to express what they have learned as readers.
