Product Description
Updated 7-11-15 Added a grayscale set….updated look colors match better…added Table of Contents and title pages separating each section…added back for equation and solution cards to be copied back-to-back in both color and grayscale

Look at the Table of Contents and decide if you want to print the colored set or the grayscale set to see which pages you should print. The recording sheet and the formative assessment sheet and answer key are only in grayscale to be used with either the colored or the grayscale set.

CCSS Math 5.NF.A.1 asks students to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with different denominators. With this activity I have included several pages that describe various strategies for identifying the common denominator needed to add or subtract these fractions. There is also additional information on how to subtract two mixed numbers when the numerator that you are subtracting from is smaller than the one that you are subtracting and how to subtract a mixed number from a whole number. Also included is a recording sheet to write the equations and solutions on the matching cards and a worksheet for extra practice.
To complete this activity, students match addition or subtraction equation cards to the correct solution cards. Some equations have more than one solution, the actual one and the final one in simplest form.
I offer this activity as a center area or a guided math group activity to be used by small groups of students, pairs of students, or as independent work for a single student. This type of practice seems to have more appeal in my classroom than more worksheets.
