These rubrics reflect the 2nd grade English Language Arts Common Core State Standards as listed at http://www.corestandards.org/.
The rubrics establish a simple way for young students to understand their academic goals using simple “I Can” statements related to each standard. Rubric posters start on the bottom as novice and work up the poster to an advanced understanding of each standard. Note: The information is listed as I have interpreted the standards and is subject to different opinions. You may use each of the smiles to represent your school’s individual grading scale. For example, my school grades using numbers 1, 2, 3, 4. These numbers would correspond with each of the smiles, starting at the bottom.
The bold/green box on each poster signifies the goal for students, by the end of the year. Students work up each poster, striving for “green”. Some students may reach the top smiley face (blue), if they are advanced in a standard area.
Black and white standard rubrics and covers may be printed and put into a large or pocket-size (if printed four to a page) packet for each student to monitor his/her own progress on individual standards. For example, in my classroom, I go over progress on each standard with students several times each year: beginning, middle, nearing end, and end of year. They color in the smiles on each standard rubric, working from bottom to top, as they reach their goals.
Thermometer smiles offer a simple way to track your whole class’ progress on specific standards.
All second grade Common Core State Standards are listed at the bottom of each poster, for teacher and/or student use.
