Product Description
Christopher Columbus has become a controversial historical figure, which makes learning about him even more important for our students! Use these printable activities in your classroom not only to teach about Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day but also to introduce your students to the Taino natives he encountered and Indigenous Peoples Day. There is something for everyone in this product!

This product contains two different ways to assess students’ knowledge of Christopher Columbus both before and after learning has occurred. The “Before and After” and “Show and Tell, Then Reflect” pages are updated alternatives to KWL charts that invite students to think, write, and draw in order to show what they know.

Also included in this product are two pages that will help students picture Columbus and his ships. These pages show students illustrations and ask them to think about and record characteristics of each. This is a great way to build background for your students if they are not very familiar with Columbus.

To help students learn about Columbus as well as the Taino natives he encountered, there are three reading and writing activities designed to accompany Jane Yolen’s picture book, Encounter.
Students can examine the figurative language (similes, metaphors, and personification) used in the book to learn about Columbus and his ships.
They will also use the main character’s actions and words as evidence to infer how he feels about Columbus’ arrival. After students have thought about the feelings and perspective of the Taino people, the “Natives’ Log” page is a great writing extension activity. It asks students to adopt the perspective of a Taino person and write a log of the arrival of Columbus.

As a way to bring current events into your classroom, use the Indigenous Peoples Day reading to introduce your students to the Columbus Day alternative that is being adopted in cities and states across the United States.

Finally, this product includes some fun activities: a word hunt and two “Word Wizard” pages, one for Columbus Day and one for Indigenous Peoples Day. These pages work really well for morning work or for students who finish early!
