Our School is Like a Cell
Students will complete a worksheet that compares parts of a school to different cell organelles based on the function of that organelle. This can be done as a class, in small groups, with a partner, or independently.

Cell Analogies
This quick activity assesses if students understand how analogies work. There are 10 analogies that students must determine a missing word to make the statement true. Again, this is based on the functions of the organelles. For example, one analogy is NUCLEUS : CELL :: _______________ : HUMAN BODY. Students would fill in the word BRAIN since the brain controls all the other organs just like the nucleus controls all the other organelles.

A Bag Full of Organelles
This assignment is to be completed independently by each student. It is a good idea to assign this on a Friday or be sure to give a few days to complete it. Students are challenged to gather items from home that represent the function of each cell organelle. They are NOT choosing items that look like the organelles, but choosing items that FUNCTION like the organelles. Students also complete a 3-column chart that lists each of the organelles, the item they chose to represent them, and a justification for choosing each item.

Super Cell Project
Students share the items they brought from home (A Bag Full of Organelles) with their group as well as justify their choices. After each member has shared, groups must come to consensus about which item BEST represents each of the organelles as they develop their “Super Cell”. Each group will complete a chart that lists the organelles and their functions as well as the item the group voted as the best representation and a justification as to why they chose the item.

Let’s Take a CELL-fie
Using the items selected by their group, students will use ipads, laptops, and/or cameras to take a picture of their assembled “Super Cell”. They will upload this image to an online website. Using the website, they will create an interactive image explaining the items they chose.

If Organelles Could Talk
Students will think creatively to come up with what cell organelles would say if they could actually talk. They will record their ideas in speech bubbles around a diagram of a plant or animal cell. A plant cell and an animal cell are included with speech bubbles already pointing to the major organelles. A page of blanks speech bubbles is also provided so students can identify other organelles (or to a larger, student-made diagram)
