I use a standards based grading system so the standards on the assessment are listed at the top. This writing assignment uses the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning format and asks students to compare the physical and chemical properties of unknown substances to determine their bonding types. I use and have the students fill out the reference document on the last page first. They then use this to compare the properties of the unknown substances to determine what type of bonds they have (ionic, molecular covalent, network covalent, and metallic). After they have determined the bonding type, they then have to figure out the formula and the name for their unknown substances.
