I use a standards based curriculum so the standards on this assessment are listed at the top for grading purposes. This writing assignment uses the Claim, Evidence, Reasoning format and is designed to be done after an introductory unit on physical properties and the difference between intensive and extensive properties. Students see a copper penny turned into a gold colored penny and have to determine if it is real gold. They collect evidence in the form of physical properties (color, mass, volume, etc.) and have to determine if the penny is now real gold.
