Description

False news is everywhere today and it’s important to help students learn to think critically and evaluate what they read. I use a combination of methods for this but this CER and CRAAP graphic organizer / worksheet is one of the best. The organizer/worksheet asks students to choose an article from a major news source and identify the different elements of CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) and CRAAP (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, purpose). Students then write a short paragraph explaining if they believe the news story or not and why. It’s an excellent critical thinking reading and writing assignment. You can adapt it by assigning a specific article to read, or giving students a specific topic or focus for their articles.

Check out the CER posters, CER graphic organizer for ELA and Math, board game, and Advertisement Discernment Scientific CER Investigation for more claim, evidence, reasoning practice!

For more information about this, and other CER activities, see the blog post CER: Claim, Evidence, Reasoning.
