This is a collection of 9 fun and engaging Hanukkah and Kwanzaa themed CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction) math word problems that are great for all first graders, all second graders, and some third graders. The problems are written with different sets of numbers that vary in difficulity so that teachers and students can choose what numbers are most appropriate. They tie in nicely to learning about different cultures and traditions around the world during the holidays.
The problem types include some division or fair share problems, multiplication problems, join result unkown (adding) problems, join start unknown, multi-step problems, and seperate result unknown (subtraction), and more. They allow for a variety of solution strategies which will result in a rich discussion as students justify their answers and communicate their strategies; which meets the needs of the Common Core.
The problems are already formatted so that you can print the page, cut them apart, and glue them in students' problem solving notebooks or math journals.
