With over 70 pre-made cards, these are ready to print and display! Each card is 8.5 inches tall and 11 inches wide with 1 card per page. Choose which cards fit your classroom. If you are unsure of whether a card will fit your classroom, include it in your options and the first time you use a card, make a checkmark with a pen or marker on the back. At the end of the year, keep the cards that have checkmarks on them.
Each classroom is different, so there are editable cards for you to type in so you can customize the CHAMPS system to best fit your classroom and your students. To type in the editable cards, simply click where it says “Type text here” and you will be ready to enter your own information! The rest of the cards are not editable.
CHAMPS is a great way to help you consistently communicate your behavior expectations with your students. As hard as we may try to keep our behavior expectations consistent across the various types of activities that we facilitate with our students, there are always going to be different expectations and different behavior that is acceptable between activity types. You want students to be silent and working independently during a quiz or test but during small group work, you want students talking just loud enough for their group members to hear them.
CHAMPS stands for:
C – Conversation: How loud should talking be?
H – Help: What should students do if they need help or have a question?
A – Activity: What type of activity will students be doing?
M – Movement: Can students get out of their seat and for what?
P – Participation: How will students complete the activity?
S – Success: What will happen at the end of the activity when students meet or exceed your expectations? (This one is optional, but highly encouraged for elementary and special education classes!) You can have Success be your success criteria for the activity, by posting an example of completed work or a checklist for students to self-check that they have completed the activity correctly.
Display the cards in an area of the room that is most often where students should be focusing their attention, such as next to the white board or interactive board you teach from. This helps keep your expectations front and center and makes it easy for you to refer back to them during the activity and go over the adjusted expectations for the next activity. It is a good idea to leave room for multiple cards for Movement and Participation
