    1. POWER POINT PRESENTATION: 125 ANIMATED AND EDITABLE SLIDES

The 125 slide Power Point presentation on Chance and Probability is broken down into six separate presentations for ease of use:

    1. Language of Chance and the Probability Scale

    2. Probability with dice

    3. Probability with spinner colors

    4. Probability with playing cards

    5. Probability with crayon colors

    6. Probability: mixed problems

♦ You may choose to present these presentations in any order except for presentation 1 and 6 that need to be presented first and last.

♦ All 125 slides are editable. You will be able to make changes to animations and content.

♦ Not just visual learners, but all students will benefit from the highly visual animations that make abstract and complex content more concrete.

♦ As a teacher, you will find that there is no preparation needed to teach this often difficult to understand math topic; simply play the slides for students to take notes on their note-taking sheets. All answers to practice examples are on the slides themselves.

*** More information on the nature of topics featured in the 125 slides can be found on section 3 and 4 pertaining to Print-n-go sheets and task cards below.

    2. NOTE-TAKING: CORNELL NOTE-STYLE

⚫ The 32 note-taking sheets are to be used in conjunction with the 125 Power Point presentation slides.

⚫ The layout of the note-style sheets are similar to Cornell-style notes. The left side features terminology and points to remember while the right side provides scaffolded notes on the lesson and practice examples.

⚫ Pick a presentation topic and play each slide one at a time giving enough time for students to record the missing information. They will be writing down information and solving practice examples from the Power Point presentation written in red text.

⚫ Students will be very engaged as they are not just watching you present the slides but in addition, they are actively documenting them.

    ➤ ➤ RECOMMENDED USE:

✅ Introduce the specific probability topic with the Power Point presentation in conjunction with the note-taking sheets followed by the print-n-go sheets and task cards.

✅ The content in the Power Point presentations introduce students to the topic and nature of questions featured in the print and go sheets. This way students are familiar with the task in order to work independently.

*** The slideshow and Cornell style notes are a perfect way to document student progress and learning.

    3. PRINT-N-GO-SHEETS

Use these 52 differentiated Print-n-Go Sheets to teach and reinforce conceptual knowledge of Chance and Probability. The hands-on interactive activities will also facilitate practical application and enable students to work with the concrete in order to understand the abstract. Moreover the activities are sure to make the teaching of Theoretical and Experimental probability not just easy but pure fun!

    ➤ ITEMS INCLUDED

Cover pages for each section, if compiling sheets into a booklet. This eliminates the need for students to write their name on each page.

    1. The Probability Scale; Words Describing Chance:

    ♦ Definitions and given scenarios

♦ Chance and Data (language of chance); class survey: favorite food; favorite sport

    2. Theoretical Probability: Manipulatives

spinner numbers, spinner names, spinner colors, marbles, dice numbers, playing cards

3.Theoretical Probability: Tree Diagrams and Grids

♦ possible outcomes of two coins using a tree diagram and a grid

♦ possible outcomes of a coin and a dice using a tree diagram and a grid

♦ possible outcomes of a dice and a spinner using a tree diagram and a grid

    4. Theoretical and Experimental Probability:

♦ Rolling a six-sided dice a given number of times.

♦ Tossing two coins a given number of times.

♦ Spinning a spinner a given number of times.

♦ Picking an M&M color a given number of times.

    5. Experimental Probability:

♦ Dice roll to find the number of trials and relative frequency of the numbers rolled.

♦ Group experiment to toss a coin a given number of times and record the total heads, total tails, total outcomes, and relative frequencies of heads and tails (fractions and decimals) for each group. This is to prove the law of large numbers that indicate that as the number of trials increase, the relative frequencies tend to get closer to the expected value (0.5) of tossing a coin.

    6. Word Problems for both theoretical and experimental probability outcomes:

This section features ‘Work with Teacher’ and ‘Student Practice’ pages. The ‘Work

with Teacher’ page will enable you to demonstrate the solution for each problem.

I work on the PDF version of the file on the I-pad. This is projected on the interactive whiteboard (via a VGA cable) as I show annotations and working out of the problems.

The ‘Student Practice’ pages will enable your students to practice the problem-solving strategies modeled by you in the ‘Work with Teacher’ pages. Problems are the same format with only a change in the numbers.

    Nature of Problems:

♦ Picking a favorable outcome from given possible outcomes.

♦ Problems pertaining to coin tosses and dice rolls

    ♦ Real-life problem: left-handed, right-handed people

♦ Problems involving possible combinations shown via a tree diagram

    ♦ Problems with Spinner spins

    SUGGESTED USE

→ There are 4 sections in this pack: Language of Chance; Theoretical Probability: working with the concrete; Theoretical and Experimental Probability: real-life experiments; Word Problems.

→ You may choose to do one section at a time depending on your students’ needs. Simply staple all the sheets in that section to the cover page after photocopying.

→ Choose each sheet as per the ability levels of your students. Sheets that feature more mature clipart kid characters are for older students or students with higher ability levels.

→ Use the interactive sheets as a follow-up to the 125 Power Point slide presentation, or general whole class or small group instruction. The activities are fairly simple, yet challenging and scaffold acquisition of key skills.

Represent sample spaces for compound events using methods such as organized lists, tables and tree diagrams. For an event described in everyday language (e.g., “rolling double sixes”), identify the outcomes in the sample space which compose the event.
Understand that, just as with simple events, the probability of a compound event is the fraction of outcomes in the sample space for which the compound event occurs.
Find probabilities of compound events using organized lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulation.
Develop a probability model (which may not be uniform) by observing frequencies in data generated from a chance process. For example, find the approximate probability that a spinning penny will land heads up or that a tossed paper cup will land open-end down. Do the outcomes for the spinning penny appear to be equally likely based on the observed frequencies?
Develop a uniform probability model by assigning equal probability to all outcomes, and use the model to determine probabilities of events. For example, if a student is selected at random from a class, find the probability that Jane will be selected and the probability that a girl will be selected.
