Do your students freeze when they are writing timed essays? Do they struggle to come up with evidence on the spot to support a thesis? Do they look like Ralphie in A Christmas Story on Santa’s lap: “Football? What’s a football?” I have a solution!
This 45-minute lesson introduces students to the CHELPSS brainstorming tool to build evidence for an argument or persuasive essay. Students will learn the acronym and apply it to an argument prompt, generating evidence in multiple categories and using it to draft a thesis and outline.
I chose the argument prompt from the released 2018 AP English Language and Composition exam, but the worksheet can be used with any expository-type prompt and the PowerPoint can easily be adapted.
