This 5 Lesson Mini-Unit includes everything you need to teach students about identifying acids and bases using various pH indicators. It also covers the neutralization of acids and bases. Depending on time constraints, each lesson could be taught during one 60-minute session, but could also be broken up into shorter sessions over the course of two weeks.
This file includes five complete lesson plans to guide students though inquiry based lessons about acids and bases. A list of necessary materials for each lesson is included as well as directions for advance preparation of materials by the teacher. There are multiple opportunities for informal assessment in each lesson, but Lesson 5 is set aside as a performance-based activity in which students must apply what they have learned to solve a problem.
Lesson 1: Students will identify household substances as acidic, basic, or neutral by using red cabbage indicator.
Lesson 2: Students will be introduced to acids, bases, and pH indicators. Students will compare the color changes when different indicators are mixed with known acidic, basic, and neutral substances in an attempt to identify the most reliable natural pH indicator.
Lesson 3: Students will classify household substances by color, identifying each one as acidic, basic, or neutral by using red cabbage indicator. Students will then order these substances from most acidic to most basic, developing a relative pH scale for red cabbage indicator.
Lesson 4: Students will test various antacid medications to determine which is the most effective at neutralizing stomach acid. They will also use the data they collect to present a case for the best antacid by writing a letter to the head of the evaluation team (the teacher).
Lesson 5: A performance-based assessment in which students will be required to apply their knowledge and process skills from previous investigations and transfer it into a new situation.
