This is a CLOSE READING activity I created for my high level 6th grade, middle school students. It is Common Core based and covers ELA standards 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.6, 6.7, and 6.10 re. academic vocabulary and facilitating students to connect and go deep within text. Although I utilized the 6th grade standards here this is a complex text and I think it works well with grades 6th-10th. I have included the student handout and also my teacher notes on activating prior knowledge. activity based on an excerpt from Train to "Train to Pakistan," by Kushwant Singh (1956) pp. 90-94
I also included a link to rewordify which takes text to a lower lexile for more student access. Also, within my teacher notes are links to my you tube videos and those that I used to show vocabulary words (as I believe in visual reinforcement for truly understanding complex vocab).
