I've found The Boy in the Striped Pajamas to be a great first-semester read-aloud for my 6th graders!

It allows them to:

- consider the purpose of historical fiction and an atypical point of view ("the other
side" as narrator)

- discuss the novel as historical fiction and as a fable (as the author intended)

- begin thinking about the Holocaust

- practice taking their own notes (the only requirement being that they write
down each new chapter title in order, with any notes they feel they need below)

Plus, my students feel that the end of each chapter "leaves them hanging" - and I love adding to the suspense with my best dramatic reading!

2 mini-lesson worksheets for use halfway through the book (context clues &
types of conflicts)

a final assessment (a chronological fill-in-the-blank activity with 26 blanks plus
three constructed response questions) with answer key

a two-page final discussion handout (would work in small groups or teacher-led)
allowing students to consider the novel as historical fiction vs. fable and to
determine/explore the theme of the dangers of ignorance for ourselves and
others
