As you all know, students look forward to watching CNN Student News. If your students are like mine, they want to watch it every...single...day. On the days you watch it in your class, make it meaningful with a tangible activity.

BONUS: This activity nearly runs itself, so teachers get 10-30 minutes of Teacher Task Time while students are engaged with the news. What a nominal investment in exchange for valuable Teacher Task Time!

I write many types of questions:
- fill-in-the-blank
- CLOSE
- matching
- short answer
- multiple choice

This activity is meant to be used as way for students to follow along with CNN Student News. The assignment can be used as a classwork grade, a ticket-out-the-door or a homework assignment.


-- This activity is not a general activity. It is specific to the date it airs.

--It can be completed as students watch the 10 minute episode, or students can complete the questions at the end of the episode as a recall activity.

-- The activity prints 2 to a page, so for a class of 30, you need only print 15 copies and cut the paper in half.

--Only print PAGE TWO for student copies! The answer key is on page three. You probably don't want to print a class set of answer keys.

--Intentionally, I use narrow margins to fit two copies on each page. The idea behind this is to allow a teacher to use less paper and ink.

-- Have students watch, listen and answer the questions. Some questions are 'lower level' and some are 'higher-level.'

--At the end of the segment, you may want to allow students time to partner-up and discuss/complete the activity.

--As all good teachers do, ask the higher-level questions that get students interested about the world in which they live!

--I want students to think, but I don't want them to miss the video. I try to make questions that keep them paying attention, but that allow them to watch more than write.
