CNN Student News: Daily Activity
PRINT and GO!
As you all know, students look forward to watching CNN Student News and international world events! If your students are like mine, they want to watch it every single day. On the days you watch it in your class, make it meaningful with a tangible activity.
This activity is meant to be used as way for students to follow along with CNN Student News. The assignment can be used as a classwork grade, a ticket-out-the-door or a homework assignment.
--Here is the link to use with this activity. The segment runs 10 minutes.
-- This activity is not a general activity. It is specific to the date it airs.
--It can be completed as students watch the 10 minute episode, or students can complete the questions at the end of the episode as a recall activity.
-- The activity prints 2 to a page, so for a class of 30, you need only print 15 copies and cut the paper in half.
--Only print PAGE TWO for student copies! The answer key is on page three. You probably don't want to print a class set of answer keys.
--Intentionally, I use narrow margins to fit two copies on each page. The idea behind this is to allow a teacher to use less paper and ink.
-- Have students watch, listen and answer the questions. Some questions are "lower level" and some are "higher-level."
--At the end of the segment, you may want to allow students time to partner-up and discuss/complete the activity.
--As all good teachers do, ask the higher-level questions that get students interested about the world in which they live!
--I want students to think, but I don't want them to miss the video. I try to make questions that keep them paying attention, but that allow them to watch more than write.
The way I run the activity:
--I set my phone timer for ONE MINUTE and I have students preview the activity by reading it.
--After that minute, I do a quick question & answer and ask students for one word responses about things we can expect to watch/hear about.
--Then, I set my timer for 1-2 minutes more and have students complete the VOCABULARY MATCHING to establish a working vocabulary. After time is up, I ask for volunteers to share answers.
--I play CNN Student News.
--When the clip ends, I set my timer again and allow 1-2 minutes for students to get with a partner, or partners, and to grab answers they may have missed.
--To finish the activity, I review the answers.
