Product Description

I created this collaborative research project for my college prep. juniors who begin the year with Macbeth and a focus on universal themes such as ambition, power, and corruption.

The research project is a great way for students to have a look at some other leaders throughout history who rose to power and descended into corruption.

The sequence of tasks is as follows:

1. Assemble a team.

2. Conduct a quick search on three leaders and determine first, second and third choice.

3. Assign topics through lottery.

4. Access Biography in Context database (this product is editable, so you can list the database available to your class).

5. Everyone read two articles.

6. Create an action plan (choose a team leader, assign tasks to team members, etc.)

7. Create a thesis statement.

8. Take notes on notecards.

9. Create an outline (brainstorm, organize, group related points, etc.)
10. Compose.

11. Format citations (MLA 8th Edition).

12. Edit using checklist.

13. Format Works Cited list.

14. Prepare final draft.

I provide examples throughout the activity using Muammar Gaddafi as my topic.

There is an example thesis statement (annotated), sample note cards (direct quote, quote from secondary source, summary note), partial outline, sample Works Cited page with five sources.

There are 28 topics from which to choose; I use Gaddafi, so I don’t allow students to pick him.

Also note, that I have not included Hitler because I want kids to expand their knowledge and most have covered Hitler’s rise and fall in history class or through movies and such.

The topic choices provide a brief description:

Pol Pot (Cambodia)-- Pol Pot was a Cambodian politician and revolutionary who led the Khmer Rouge from 1963 until 1997. From 1963 to 1981, he served as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Kampuchea.
There is also a blank chart to list due dates.

I've also included two Task Cards that students fill out as proof that they are on task and on schedule. These also allow me to monitor progress and individual's contributions.

Includes a peer evaluation addressing contributions to the project and collaborative skills.

Also, there is a calendar of my students' activities and due dates to help with your planning.

Thank you for your consideration of this resource! Lori
