The Highwayman, a narrative poem by Alfred Noyes, has been one of my favorites since I started teaching language arts over 20 years ago. I've memorized it, recited it to kids and explained it over and over. In this activity, they will gain a deep and comprehensive understanding of the poem, the story, the figurative language and new vocabulary through close reading.
