Are you struggling to figure out how to tie the new Common Core Reading Standards into a homework component?
I have created this common core aligned reader's response journal for use in your classroom as homework. With each month, the standards change and eventually review and incorporate earlier taught standards. This homework packet can be used for homework once a week or on a nightly basis. It is a quick and easy way to bring the Common Core home! Everything is ready to go!
I also use these responses as part of my center work in my listening center. This ensures that what is being taught at school during Reader's Workshop is also being reinforced at home. Simply print out the response for the particular month, teach it during a Reader's Workshop focus lesson, and then use it in your listening center too!
A note about the creation of the journal:
The journal pages created in this packet can be used in a couple of different ways:
1. You can print them out and send home one a week in the bag (not in a book or notebook).
2. You could also count the number of weeks in each month and make the packets. For example, if there are four Wednesdays in October (then you know you need to make a reader’s response journal with four October pages, etc.).
3. Or you can reduce the size of the entry page on the copier at our school and then staple them into a composition book (which is what I do). Each week when the journal comes back, I check the entry and write a few comments then I staple in the page for the next week’s assignment.
*With the common core, as you know, we are striving for students’ to gain a more in-depth type of knowledge. This homework is a great way for parents to see what we are working on in class and for students to practice at home. It also allows children the opportunity to work on standards more than once and apply their knowledge in different ways.
**Please know that if you want to send this homework home on a nightly basis you absolutely can! I only do it once a week, but have included two versions of the initial letter to accommodate different preferences!
