This activity takes Churchill's first speech before the House of Commons as Prime Minister, the "Blood,Toil, Tears and Sweat" speech, and includes text-dependent questions to help the students gain a better understanding of what he was saying and its historical importance. It also includes an exemplar page to help the teacher and the students to see where we eventually want to go with this process. Close reading is a fundamental SS skill in the Common Core (ELA) model.
Common Core Objectives:
6-8.RH.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources.
