PURPOSE: This lab will be examining the effects on the overall growth patterns of plants due to the application of different nutrient fertilizers.
LAB OVERVIEW: The teacher will be assigning students to work in small groups. Students will be planting seeds and applying different kinds of nutrient fertilizers to grow these plants. Each person in the groups will use a different fertilizer and the group will have a control plant. Student will need to keep the growth medium moist (with water or mixture). Students will discuss with their groups and record the observations during the growth and take physical measurements at the end of the growing cycle. Students will create graphs and analyze collected data with their group. Afterwards students will have a class discussion, allowing students to make even broader conclusions about the larger experimental sample.
NGSS - Practices: Carry out investigation in 9-12 that builds on k-8 experiences and progresses to include investigation that provide evidence for and tests conceptual models
Please see sample for the exact lab report. This lab is super easy to set up and conduct with students. The lab also helps reinforce the idea/concept of plant structure in an engaging hands-on way.
