Help your students discover that there is more to arguing than rage and shouting!
This unit is the product of 3 years of writing, revising, experimenting, and more revising. It is a complete unit covering logical syllogisms, fallacies, turning syllogisms into arguments/persuasive essays, refutations, helpful starters and quizzes and notes, and a fun activity with bumper stickers. This is my all-time favorite unit to teach, and it really pushes students to add complexity to their views and to organize their thoughts into a format that makes sense to others.
I have taught this unit to advanced 8th graders and to 11th graders, and a couple of ambitious and precocious 6th graders.
Teach your students to disagree effectively without being disagreeable, and get them excited about critical thinking!
