This activity includes 40 cards. Your students will learn multiple meanings and puns as they identify and spell 20 compound words.
INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY 1: Individual students use the visual clues to create compound words by matching the two pictures on the dachshund.
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Tape the dachshund halves on students' backs. Without talking, each student must figure out what picture is on his/her back, and then find the student whose picture creates a compound word when combined with his/hers.
CLASS ACTIVITY 3: List the compound words and determine if they are open, closed, or hyphenated compound words.
Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words (e.g., birdhouse, lighthouse, housefly; bookshelf, notebook, bookmark).
